The story behind the changes

How the identity evolved

A camera explains the app immediately

Instagram launched with an app icon that resembled a vintage instant camera. The leather, lens, rainbow stripe, and highlights made photography unmistakable when the new service still needed explanation.

The glyph keeps only essential camera cues

In 2016 Instagram replaced the detailed object with a rounded-square outline, central lens, and small viewfinder dot. A vivid gradient preserved energy while making the icon simpler to recognize at mobile scale.

Color becomes the flexible asset

The 2022 refinement intensified the gradient and supported a broader visual system. The essential camera geometry remained stable while type and color could flex around creators and content.

Compare Instagram’s reduction with Meta / Facebook and Reddit: all three simplified for tiny app surfaces, but Instagram made color itself a primary signature.
