A quick sketch gives Reddit a face
Reddit launched in 2005 with an informal alien mascot created by cofounder Alexis Ohanian. The character was deliberately simple: a rounded head, antenna, eyes, and a broad smile. That approachable imperfection matched a site built around user submissions and community discussion rather than a polished corporate voice.
Snoo becomes community property
The mascot later gained the name Snoo, a play on “what’s new.” Because the construction was so simple, communities could redraw it in costumes and themed variations. That adaptability became a feature of the identity. Reddit kept a recognizable core while letting users see their own interests reflected in it.
A consistent wordmark supports growth
As Reddit expanded to apps, advertising, and international audiences, the lowercase wordmark and orange-red icon became more systematic. The company’s 2017-era brand work clarified typography and the circular Snoo icon without losing the casual personality that distinguished Reddit from more formal technology platforms.
Conversation becomes the organizing idea
Reddit’s 2023 refresh placed Snoo inside a conversation bubble and introduced custom Reddit Sans and Reddit Display typefaces. The official announcement emphasized accessibility, global language support, and the discussions unique to the platform. The color also shifted to a brighter OrangeRed for stronger recognition.
A mascot can mature without becoming anonymous
Unlike the symbol-only evolution of Twitter / X, Reddit retained its character and made it more expressive. Three-dimensional poses, thumbs, and reactions expanded Snoo’s emotional range, while the flat core logo remained compact. The lineage shows how a digital company can professionalize without sanding away the odd detail that made it memorable.
Pinterest likewise condensed a more expressive early identity into a compact badge built for sharing and discovery. Explore the Pinterest logo history.
