A detailed shield projects Hollywood heritage

The dimensional shield and sash carried cinematic authority but contained fine details that became difficult in small digital uses.

The story behind the changes

How the identity evolved

The shield becomes shorthand for entertainment

Warner Bros. was founded in 1923 by Harry, Albert, Sam and Jack Warner. The WB initials appeared inside a shield early in the studio’s life, creating a mark that could behave like both a maker’s seal and the opening title of a film. The studio repeatedly altered, dimensionalized and occasionally replaced the shield, yet kept returning to the same basic monogram.

The detailed version introduced in the 1990s reinforced Hollywood heritage with a broad shield, sash and dimensional finish. It worked dramatically on screen, but its fine details were harder to reproduce in small digital spaces.

The 2019 redraw removes the sash

Warner Bros. worked with Pentagram to reduce the identity to its essential shield and WB monogram. The 2019 design used golden-ratio proportions, streamlined the letters and introduced a brighter blue. Removing the sash made the symbol easier to scale across streaming interfaces, social icons, signage and environmental applications.

A centennial-era shield reconnects with familiar proportions

During the studio’s centennial period, Warner Bros. Discovery introduced another corporate shield with broader, more familiar proportions. The 2023 mark balances contemporary simplicity with the silhouette audiences associate with decades of film and television openings.

Compare Warner Bros. with Disney, which relies on a founder-derived signature, and Netflix, whose screen-native identity largely abandoned an emblem. Warner’s shield is different: it acts as a container capable of changing texture, color and cinematic treatment without losing its outline.
