The 1981 design
MTV launched in 1981 with a mark built around a chunky M and contrasting TV letters. Designer Fred Seibert’s first-person archive documents the development process and artwork by Manhattan Design. This page shows the original logo artwork rather than a music-video still or channel screenshot.
A logo made to vary
The MTV mark’s proportions created a stable silhouette, while color, material, and motion could change around it. That flexibility helped the identity work across promos and on-air graphics. Compare MTV’s expressive approach with the more consistent boxed initials of the BBC and streaming identity of YouTube.
