Mozilla’s name referenced the idea of a “Mosaic killer,” and its early red identity embraced a creature-like, rebellious personality. The heavy wordmark helped an open-source project stand apart from conventional software corporations.
In 2017 Mozilla replaced the older mark with a wordmark that substituted :// for the letters ill. The browser protocol reference made the open web visible inside the organization’s own name and invited public participation in the design process.
The 2024 system introduced a flag-like M symbol and a warmer, more expressive visual language. It broadened Mozilla’s presence beyond a single browser while retaining its advocacy for an accessible internet.
Mozilla’s identity sits naturally beside Firefox and Android, open technology ecosystems that need both a parent story and recognizable product marks.
