The story behind the changes

How the identity evolved

The name and emblem share the same idea

Mitsubishi combines Japanese words associated with three and a diamond-like water chestnut shape. The visual mark unites three rhombuses, making the corporate name visible without letters.

Family and shipping heritage meet

The design is linked to the three-leaf crest of the Tosa clan and the three stacked rhombuses used by the Iwasaki family. Their combination created a concise emblem for the company’s early shipping operations.

One symbol survives industrial expansion

The three diamonds later represented businesses spanning transportation, finance, heavy industry, electronics, and automobiles. Mitsubishi Motors pairs the emblem with a straightforward wordmark while preserving the historic geometry.

Mitsubishi’s long-lived device can be compared with Toyota and Subaru, Japanese vehicle brands whose emblems carry meaning beyond an initial.
