KLM

KLM’s logo brings together a crown symbol and a concise blue wordmark. The airline’s corporate history records the mark’s designer and the later refinement of the identity.

The lineage

KLM through the years

1991—present

The crown-and-wordmark is refined

KLM’s familiar logo was designed by F. H. K. Henrion in 1961 and modified in 1991 by Chris Ludlow and colleagues. This entry shows the refined crown-and-wordmark, not an aircraft image.

The story behind the changes

How the identity evolved

A crown above the name

KLM’s familiar logo combines a small crown with the airline’s initials. The design was created by F. H. K. Henrion in 1961 and modified by Chris Ludlow at Henrion, Ludlow & Schmidt in 1991. The mark’s uncomplicated form remains legible at small sizes and across airline touchpoints.

Refinement without losing recognition

The 1991 update refined a design whose core arrangement had been in place since 1961. This page shows the actual crown-and-wordmark logo, not an aircraft photo. Compare KLM’s identity with Southwest Airlines and Lufthansa.
