The story behind the changes

How the identity evolved

A short name supports a broad wardrobe

Gap’s four-letter name is compact enough to work as both a wordmark and a retail sign. It does not describe a specific garment, allowing the company to cover denim, basics, accessories, and family clothing.

The blue square becomes the familiar badge

White serif letters inside a dark navy field gave the brand an established, almost collegiate tone. The enclosure worked equally well on storefronts, shopping bags, garment labels, and advertising.

Consistency survives fashion cycles

A brief 2010 attempt to replace the familiar mark met strong resistance, demonstrating how much recognition the blue square had accumulated. Gap quickly returned to the established identity and has continued refining rather than discarding it.

Gap’s durable retail badge can be compared with Levi’s and UNIQLO, clothing brands that balance everyday accessibility with a strong visual stamp.
