The story behind the changes

How the identity evolved

A web payment name leans forward

PayPal grew out of the late-1990s online payment market and quickly required a mark that could reassure buyers at checkout. By 2007 its familiar two-tone blue wordmark used italic lettering to suggest speed while separating Pay from Pal through color.

The identity was recognizable on desktop commerce pages, but mobile devices and emerging payment interfaces created a need for a compact symbol that could function without the full name.

Overlapping Ps visualize connection

PayPal’s 2014 redesign, developed by fuseproject, introduced a double-P monogram alongside a stronger modified-Futura wordmark. The overlapping letters represented connection between people, while indigo and brighter blue improved impact on high-definition screens. PayPal described it as its first identity update since 2007 and designed it for a mobile-first, multi-device world.

The wordmark becomes neutral and direct

Pentagram’s 2024 refresh sharpened the monogram and separated it from a new PayPal Pro wordmark. Black and white became the primary corporate palette, with blue retained as energetic accent color. The shift reduced the visual conventions PayPal shared with other fintech brands and made the typography feel more confident and universal.

Compare PayPal with eBay, its former corporate parent, and Mastercard. All three simplified for digital transactions, but PayPal’s layered initials uniquely turn an act of transfer into the structure of the mark itself.
